Transition - what's it all about?
Transition and orientation definitions
'Transition' is a term that pertains to issues of adjustment experienced by undergraduate and postgraduate students; all students are in a state of constant transition as they progress: to, during and from university.
The Monash Transition Program supports all students, undergraduate and postgraduate, adjust successfully to university life and study, i.e., "transition" through university. It aims to provide an improved "transition" experience for all students through:
- Beginning the process of enculturation into the teaching and learning styles, life, procedures, practices and culture of the university.
- Encouraging students to engage with the university, a particular course, and people at a specific campus.
- Emphasizing the need for students to take responsibility for their own learning and have realistic expectations.
- Acknowledging the importance of the support provided by peers, staff and students' families.
The Monash Transition Program values Orientation as a:
- Mechanism for introducing the university, a specific campus, its people and culture to new students.
- Series of events that facilitate identification with a specific campus, course, subjects, university staff and culture.
- Means of providing opportunity for students to become familiar with the physical environment of the university.
- Prime time to communicate the university’s expectations of students to them.
Transition and orientation distinctions
Orientation: short term (an event or series of events)
- A 'fact gathering' mission.
- Can be effected though materials (printed or electronic form) but optimally accomplished 'in situ'.
Transition: long term (a process)
- As a process of assimilation, accommodation and acceptance it takes time and is in a state of constant flux.
- Is experiential – while common elements exist upon which initiatives to support student adjustment can be based - each individual student's journey will be different.
- Advice, guidelines and strategies offered by the Monash Transition Program are to be utilized by students to 'map on to' their individual experiences.
