1999 - Monash becomes member of prestigious Group of Eight


The Group of Eight (Go8) works to ensure a consistent and sustainable policy environment which maximizes the wide-ranging economic, social and cultural benefits to the Australian community of higher education and which ensures Australian universities are recognised as among the best in the world.

Today: Membership of the group consists of the vice-chancellors (presidents) of: The Australian National University, Monash University, The University of Adelaide, The University of Melbourne, The University of New South Wales, The University of Queensland, The University of Sydney and The University of Western Australia.

Vice-Chancellors of these universities began meeting informally in 1994. The Go8 was formally incorporated in 1999.
