Library services

The Monash University Library has branches on each campus of the University. The library provides access to over 2.9 million items and a vast range of resources and services online including access the library catalogue and tutorials.

Facilities

Every branch is equipped with computer workstations, photocopying and printing facilities and group and quiet study areas. Some branches provide study rooms and equipment that can be booked.

Loans

Borrowing from Monash University Library

Students with a valid Monash student ID card may borrow from any branch of Monash University Library.

  • Undergraduate students may borrow a total of 15 items for 14 days.
  • Postgraduate students may borrow up to 30 items for 28 days (though items may be recalled after 14 days).

Some items that are in heavy demand have shorter loan periods or are placed in a separate reserve collection.

Postal loans

Postal loans are also available for off-campus learning students. Off-campus students can also request photocopies of book chapters and journal articles.

Services for students with a disability

Monash University Library endeavours to ensure that all students with a disability are able to access the library and its resources. Most branches have well-equipped adaptive technology rooms and staff who can offer special assistance. You will usually need to make arrangements in advance when specific assistance is required. See a full list of equipment and services provided at branch libraries.

Berwick campus

The Berwick Library and Learning Commons specialises in tourism, communication, business and information technology.

Caulfield campus

The Caulfield Library collection has particular strengths in business and economics, art and design, and information technology.

Clayton campus

The library’s collections on the Clayton campus are distributed, by subject area, across three branches.

  • The Sir Louis Matheson Library contains the humanities, social sciences, education and business and economics collections. Within the Matheson Library are several special collections. The Asian Studies Research Collection contains material in Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Southeast Asian languages, including Asian newspapers. The Rare Books Collection contains more than 100,000 rare and vulnerable items, the earliest dating from the mid-15th century.
  • The Law Library is one of the largest in Australia. Strengths of the collection include criminal law and criminology, corporate law, international law and human rights law, and the law of the Pacific Islands.
  • The Hargrave-Andrew Library contains the engineering, information technology, mathematics, medicine, psychology and science collections. Of particular significance are the large map collection, extensive collections of mathematical books and standards.

Gippsland campus

Particular strengths of the Gippsland Library include business, humanities, social sciences and communication, information technology, health sciences and education. There is also a large collection of teaching materials for education students.

Parkville campus

The CL Butchers Pharmacy Library specialises in pharmaceutical sciences and drug technology and is considered the most important collection of its type in Australia.

Peninsula campus

The Peninsula Library has particular strengths in nursing, business, information technology, and primary and early childhood education. Collections are also being developed to support new courses in physiotherapy, occupational therapy and health sciences. A collection of medical models supports the training of nurses, ambulance officers and health sciences students and there is also a large collection of teaching materials for education students.
