Disability Liaison Unit

The Disability Liaison Unit (DLU) provides a range of services to assist students who have a disability or long-term medical condition to participate as independently as possible in academic activities.

The DLU may be able to provide assistance to students who:

  • have a hearing impairment and require notetakers and/or AUSLAN interpreters
  • require access to material in an alternative format
  • have a physical or sensory impairment and require assistance to access library materials
  • have a psychiatric disability or a condition relating to mental health
  • require specialised equipment on-campus such as computer screen reading software
  • require assistance accessing a facility on-campus due to a mobility impairment
  • require Alternative Arrangements for Assessment (AAA's)
  • require a Disability Liaison Officer to assist them to liaise with academic and general staff.

Eligibility for DLU services

To receive services from the DLU, the student needs to:

  • be actively enrolled in an award course at Monash University
  • have a disability defined in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act (1992)
  • provide relevant, current documentation from a qualified professional who has comprehensive training and experience in the particular field of disability or health profession eg Medical Specialist, Psychiatrist, General Practitioner, Educational Psychologist.

The documentation should include a full statement of the nature of the condition, the impact of this on the student's ability to study and recommended reasonable accommodations in the university context.  If requiring additional time in exams for writing or rest breaks, the practitioner must specify the exact amount of time required.

Documentation guidelines can be found at the Disability Liaison website.

Disclosure of a disability and confidentiality

Complete confidentiality is maintained. Medical or other supporting documentation is used to assess or verify the most appropriate service.  This documentation is placed on file at the DLU and kept in a secure location.

What is my responsibility?

It is the student's responsibility to disclose disability to the DLU.  Early notification of particular requirements ensures timely provision of appropriate services.  Requirements such as material in Braille, e-text, AUSLAN interpreters etc take considerable time to organise.  To ensure that these or other services are in place prior to the start of semester, students are urged to make contact with the DLU as soon as an offer of acceptance is received.  This will allow time to discuss requirements, check campus accessibility, and the viability of the course.

Course advice

Students who have a disability or chronic medical condition who require specific course information should contact Monash's Prospective Students' Office.
