Teachers Seminar Program 2009The Teachers' Seminar was held on Thursday 11 June at the Clayton campus. Approximately 160 teachers attended a diverse range of information sessions and workshops throughout the day. Every faculty of the University participated, and the seminar was opened by Professor Adam Shoemaker who gave an inspiring update on the progress of the Monash Passport. ProgramKeynote address - Passport to Monash - one year on. Launched in 2008, the Monash Passport has provided a clear direction for both staff and students at the University. Professor Shoemaker will provide further insight into the current directions and ambitions of Monash University within the framework of the Monash Passport and the impact this is having on our undergraduate students. This session will examine some of these outcomes for students of this dynamic Faculty. Professor Willis will also discuss the postgraduate offerings and how the Monash Passport is being reflected in the Faculty's courses. Pathways to Art and Design at Monash Presenters: Brett Jones, Monash College and Anna Caterer, Faculty of Art & Design Many students find undertaking a Monash College diploma provides an ideal bridge between school and university, as it makes the transition as smooth and simple as possible. This session focuses on the Diploma of Art and Design Studies which leads to the suite of undergraduate programs at the Faculty of Art & Design. The session will look at this pathway program from three perspectives, that of Monash College, the Faculty of Art & Design and a current Art & Design student who has successfully transitioned from Monash College. New directions in Business programs - Faculty of Business and Economics Presenters: Mr David Watson - Course Director, Bachelor of Business and Dr Glen Croy - Deputy Course Director, Bachelor of Business and Commerce. This session will outline the faculty's innovative program with developments across its undergraduate degrees. It will also cover details of our tourism course, outlining the breadth of the tourism sector, and opportunities for graduates. This session will not only cover new course information but will also provide both student and academic perspectives. 3. Bachelor of Science Advanced with Honours- A course for high-achieving students Presenter: Dr Cristina Varsavsky, Associate Dean (Education) Faculty of Science The Bachelor of Science Advanced with Honours is a unique course designed to attract high achieving students interested in pursuing a career in research. Dr Varsavsky, will highlight the features of the Bachelor of Science Advanced with Honours. The session will also provide the invaluable perspectives of a graduate, employer and current student. The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Presenters: Jesilda Fernando, Student Recruitment Manager and Jordan Kane, PhD student The session will highlight the undergraduate courses offered in the faculty, including entry requirements and career options.There will be a specific focus on admission into the MBBS degree.A current PhD student, who completed the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) degree at the faculty, will also be providing an insight into life as a Monash student. Using Computer Games as an Educational Tool - Faculty of Information Technology Presenters: Andrew Owen, Marketing and Trent Gwillim, second-year student The session will demonstrate how computer games can be used to teach History, Mathematics, English and other subjects in a fun and interactive way. There will be an overview of the Computer Games Boot Camp in July and an overview of the Step IT Up program for secondary students. This will include examples of student work from previous years. Also an overview of the IT Challenge - Examples of past winning entries in the National IT Challenge (Secondary School competition) and the progression of those winners to the Faculty of Information Technology. Pharmatopia: a virtual island for real world teaching - Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Presenters: Dr Ian Larson, Lecturer and Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science graduate. The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is leading the way in worldwide teaching innovation with the development of a virtual hi-tech teaching tool that is being enthusiastically adopted by leading pharmacy schools from around the globe. Tour the faculty's virtual tabletting laboratory that gives students the opportunity to develop and test medicines, each with different ingredients and qualities, in a virtual environment. Hear from a formulation scientist about how skills learnt in the virtual laboratory would be applied in industry. View the presentation (ppt 1.1mb) 3. JD and LLB, What's the difference? - Faculty of Law Presenter: Jamie McDonald, Manager, Marketing and Student Recruitment and current students With the current discussion about the value, relevance and appropriateness of undergraduate versus postgraduate vocational programs for students this question is one that is now being asked by prospective students. The JD (Juris Doctor) and the more established LLB (Bachelor of Laws) both enable students to qualify as a practising lawyer through the Monash Law School, though each provides a different pathway to this career. Engineering the future - a tour Facilitator: Alana Harries, Student Recruitment Manager and students from the Monash Engineering Students Society, Engineers Without Borders and Monash Motorsport Engineers have created some of the biggest advances in humankind's wellbeing over the past 100 years. Engineers have provided clean water, new medicines, safe food supplies and improved structures. On this walk and talk tour we will visit some of the Faculty of Engineering's superb facilities including the wind tunnel, the Monash NanoPhysics Lab and the Monash Motorsport workshop. We'll stop along the way and talk to current students about their experiences at Monash and drop into labs to hear about, and look at, the cutting edge research being undertaken in the faculty. 5. The Arts advantage: International opportunities and employer perspectives Facilitator: Ms Ann Maree Lester This workshop will cover the expanding international study opportunities available to Arts students and what employers value in Arts graduates. Included in the session will be information about study abroad and our new raft of intensive courses run through our Prato Centre in Italy, including a student perspective on study abroad. An employer will provide insight into what employers value about arts graduates and the skills they seek.
