Australian citizens/permanent residents

Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

This award, offered by the Australian Government, is available to Australian citizens and to permanent residents. It provides a yearly non-taxable stipend of $A19,616 (2007). Approximately 115 awards are offered each year at Monash. Persons who have completed a four year undergraduate degree or equivalent at H1 level and who wish to undertake a research masters, PhD or professional doctorate are eligible to apply.

The following are ineligible for an APA:

  • international students;
  • those who already hold a PhD or professional doctorate;
  • those who intend undertaking a second masters degree;
  • those who have previously held an APA (formerly APRA/CPRA) for 3 months or more;
  • those in receipt of another equivalent award/scholarship/salary.

Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) (APA (I))

These awards prepare high calibre researchers for industry research. Two main types of students are targeted: recent graduates interested in industry research and research personnel from industry upgrading their research skills.

The awards, offered by the Australian Government, are available to Australian Citizens, permanent residents, and to New Zealand citizens. Potential candidates will be invited to submit applications to academic staff members who have been awarded one of these collaborative grants.

These awards carry a non-taxable stipend of $A25,627 (2007) plus allowances.

Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS)

Approximately 140 Monash Graduate Scholarships are offered annually. They provide a yearly non-taxable stipend of $19,616 (2007). The following are eligible to apply for the above award:

  • Australian citizens or permanent residents;
  • international students;
  • those who hold a bachelors degree with first class honours, or a qualification deemed equivalent, from an Australian or overseas tertiary institution;
  • those who wish to undertake a research masters, professional doctorate or PhD.

Awards will not be available to those who:

  • are in receipt of another equivalent award/scholarship/salary offering similar benefits.
  • have already completed a PhD or research professional doctorate or equivalent, unless there is a significant change in research direction;
  • have already completed a masters degree or equivalent, unless intending to undertake a PhD or research professional doctorate; or unless there is a significant change in research direction;
  • have previously held for more than three months a Monash Graduate Scholarship unless in the case of a PhD or research professional doctorate candidate the prior award was for a masters degree;
  • are enrolled or are intending to enrol as a research candidate under Monash’s external mode regulations.

Monash Silver Jubilee Postgraduate Scholarship

This scholarship is offered each year to a group of faculties in turn. The award carries a yearly non-taxable stipend of $25,627 (2007). In all other respects, eligibility criteria are the same as for the Monash Graduate Scholarship.

Sir James McNeill Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship

This prestigious scholarship was established in memory of the late Sir James McNeill who had a long association with Monash University. The scholarship provides a generous living allowance. Only those candidates proposing to undertake a doctorate in Music, Engineering, Science or Medicine, are eligible for this award.

Monash Departmental Scholarships (MDS)

Many departments at Monash University offer postgraduate scholarships funded from departmental or outside funds to be used at the department's discretion. For further details contact the head of your department.

Monash Research Scholarships (MRS)

Many departments at Monash University offer externally funded postgraduate scholarships where the sponsor indicates that the funding is to be used for a scholarship under specified conditions. For further details contact the head of your department.
