Supporting documentation

In most cases you need to provide supporting documentation to substantiate your claim when applying for an equity (disadvantage) scholarship. If you’re not sure which category applies to you, refer to our equity definitions.

Due dates for supporting documentation

Monash and direct applicants 

  • Applications close Friday 15 February 2013
  • You must have a course offer or be enrolled in a Monash University course; and have a Monash authcate and password to apply online.
  • Documentation must be mailed to the Coursework Scholarships Unit or received/handed in at any Monash Connect by 5pm (AEST), 15 February 2013. 

Financial disadvantage
Your application must include the following:

1. If you are receiving Centrelink benefits

  1. You can authorise Monash to electronically obtain details of your Centrelink benefits (Centrelink Confirmation eServices) by providing your Customer Reference Number (CRN) in your application form. Your CRN must match your family name and date of birth recorded with Centrelink to produce a valid outcome. If you provide a valid CRN, you are not required to supply additional financial documentation or statements. Your Centrelink benefits must be valid at the time Monash verifies your benefits with Centrelink. This is when scholarship applications close.
  2. If you do not provide your CRN in your application you must obtain a statement of benefit (including your annual income figure) from Centrelink and submit a certified copy of this statement. You must also provide a certified copy of your Health Care Card or Pension Card, details of your household structure and details of any payments received in exceptional circumstances. This documentation must be dated between August and November 2012.

Any documentation that is not in your name (i.e. the applicant) must list the relationship of the person to you.

2. If you are not receiving Centrelink benefits
If you are not eligible for any Centrelink benefits you will be asked to describe the financial hardship you have experienced and how this has affected your education. You must explain why you are not currently receiving Centrelink benefits, how long the circumstances have lasted, and whether you expect these circumstances to continue in the future.

You must provide the following:

  1. A certified copy of your Australian Tax Office Notice of Financial Assessment for the 2011/12 financial year. If you do not have this document then provide three consecutive pay slips (or certified copies) dated between November 2012 and January 2013.
  2. If you depend financially upon other people (i.e. your parents or a partner) you must provide the following FOR EACH contributing member of your household to support your claim:
    1. certified copy of their Australian Tax Office-Notice of Financial Assessment for the 2011/12 financial year. If this document is not available then provide 3 consecutive pay slips (or certified copies) dated between November 2012 and January 2013, and
    2. A statement specifying their yearly or weekly contributions to you. In the statement they must also provide details of any other dependent children, including their ages and whether or not they are tertiary students living at home.

Any documentation that is not in your name (i.e. the applicant) must list the relationship of the person to you.

Indigenous Australian background
No supporting documentation is required. Your status will be verified by the Monash Yulendj Indigenous Engagement Unit.

Recent Refugee
Your application must include the following:

  1. A description of your circumstances and living conditions prior to leaving your country
  2. Details of your education completed prior to arriving in Australia and any education you have completed in Australia
  3. Details of your travel method and route to Australia (specifically how long it took between leaving your country and arriving in Australia).

Difficult circumstances
Your application must include the following:

  1. A statement describing the nature of your difficult circumstances and the effect this has had on your educational performance – this will provide the assessor the information they need to understand the effect of the disadvantage.
  2. A confidential statement of support form (pdf, 33kb) downloaded and completed as detailed in the form by a relevant responsible person, unrelated to you, who can verify your circumstance/s.

A responsible person can be a:

  • Doctor or health care professional
  • Lawyer
  • Social worker
  • Registered counsellor
  • Religious or community leader
  • School principal/teacher/senior member of school staff.

Regional and remote areas
Further assessment of disadvantage will be done using Census district data collection.

Disability or long-term medical condition
You must provide the following with your application:

  1. An impact statement describing your disability or medical condition and demonstrating the effect on your educational performance. This statement provides the person assessing your application the information they need to understand the effect of the disadvantage.
  2. You must also submit a confidential statement of support form (pdf, 33kb) completed by a relevant health care professional (unrelated to you) who is currently treating you and can verify your circumstance/s.

If you’re a current Monash student and unable to provide a confidential statement of support, you can provide a letter from the Monash University Disability Liaison Unit (DLU).

Attended an under-represented school
No supporting documentation is required. You will be assessed based on the school selected in your application.
