Find a research degree

Monash offers a large range of research programs, including interdisciplinary research and research courses that provide the opportunity to blend coursework and professional practice.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

  • A PhD enables students to complete extensive, independent research under the supervision of an expert academic.
  • The research will culminate in a written thesis, which offers a significant contribution to knowledge in the discipline concerned.

Professional doctorates

  • These courses combine research, coursework and in some cases professional work/industry experience.
  • While they are research-based, professional doctorates focus on the improvement of professional practice.
  • Professional doctorates are available in the areas of education, law, psychology and public health.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

  • The MPhil complements existing faculty-based research-masters degrees and provides students with the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research.

Masters by research

  • Most faculties offer masters-by-research programs. These courses have the same underlying principles of a PhD program, however the length of the thesis submitted for examination will be less than for a PhD.
  • The masters by research can be completed as a stand-alone program or be used as a pathway to a PhD program.
