On-campus support services

Study skills assistance

University learning is a new experience for most students. Many need some assistance with skills in lecture note-taking, essay writing, time management and exam preparation or with general study skills. Help is available free of charge through the Language and Learning Services unit at all Monash campuses in Victoria. Online study skills tutorials are also available at the Language Support website.

Student associations

All enrolled students have the right to participate in the University associations. The student association is the hub of any campus. Each association has a general enquiry desk, which is a good place to start if you are not sure where to go or what services are available on your campus.

Counselling

The Monash University Counselling Service  provides students with professional and confidential psychological counselling. Individual counselling is offered for academic, personal and relationship problems and issues. Seminar programs are run in the areas of stress management, motivation, self-esteem, time management, exam skills, relaxation and communication skills.

Disability support program

Assistance is available for people with permanent or temporary disabilities or long-term medical conditions. To make an appointment to discuss individual requirements or for further information, contact the Disability Liaison Unit  on +61 3 9905 5704, or contact the Gippsland campus on +61 3 9902 6794.

Computer and internet access

The Information Technology Services (ITS) division, in conjunction with the faculties, provides a range of IT services to students while on campus and, where possible, off-campus. Students can use computer labs to type essays and to access the University network and software, including Microsoft Office, statistical and simulation packages and programming languages. Students are encouraged to use their home computers and can access most of the University’s resources off-campus via the internet.

All students get an email address and a computer account, which they can use during the course of their studies. Access to email is generally free to students while on campus. Each campus has a help desk to assist students with IT queries.

Campus security

University is no different from the rest of the community when it comes to security personal safety is an individual responsibility. However, Monash offers assistance to students 24 hours a day, providing security patrols and free escorts to car parking areas after hours. A security bus service operates on some campuses. An internal emergency telephone number is also staffed 24 hours a day.

Student accommodation

Many students may find it necessary to relocate in order to study at Monash. Some will travel from isolated rural areas, country towns, interstate or overseas. Other students see the change to tertiary study as a good opportunity to experience a more independent lifestyle and choose to leave home. Monash offers a variety of accommodation options. Finding suitable accommodation is an important part of preparing for tertiary education.

Monash Residential Services  on each campus provides advice about on-campus and off-campus accommodation options, and students should contact them to discuss their individual needs and seek referral. Where on-campus accommodation is available, it may be worthwhile to make a trip to the relevant campus to view the facilities.

Other community services

Other services available to students include chaplaincy, child care, dental health care, health care, legal advice, optometry and student welfare. See the Health, Wellbeing and Development website  for more information.
