Mature-age student profile
Elizabeth Soutar
Student name: Elizabeth Soutar
Course: Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education -- Secondary
Campus: Clayton
What is your education background?
I completed secondary school in 2002 at St. Paul’s Anglican Grammar School in Warragul. I attempted a course when I first left school, but it didn’t agree with me as it was all off-campus.
Why did you choose to study at Monash?
My first preference was Monash, my second was Melbourne. I chose Monash because it had a better vibe, I felt more comfortable on the campus. I also liked the music faculty and the people I met on the open day.
As a mature-age student, what was important to you when considering returning back to study?
Returning to uni as a mature-aged student (of 24) was a decision I made for a few reasons. Mainly because I wanted a qualification that would enable me to get a better, higher-paid job! I also knew at I had so much more to learn in the area of music and wanted to expand on that.
What did you do after you completed high school?
I tried uni for two years, but I didn’t enjoy the course. Since finishing year 12, I have been teaching piano at a local primary school and privately. I have travelled overseas to Japan twice, and continued working on my own piano skills with a well-respected pianist.
What education or life experiences prior to Monash has benefited you now that you have returned back to study?
I believe the experience of working for myself and living out of home for a few years has taught me that it is really important to get a degree if you want a fabulous job. I know that if I want to be a secondary school teacher I have to complete a degree. This has motivated me to a huge degree.
When I tried my first course, I wasn’t really interested in it, and could see no fabulous outcome at the end. This time, because I know I must finish, I am trying harder and seem to be doing much better.
I also think that because I had those five extra years to work on my piano skills, I am quite comfortable in the music course.
What three things would you tell a prospective mature-age student about your experience and decision to study at Monash?
- It is worth it!
- Monash has a lot of help for mature-aged students.
- Follow your instincts; choose the course you know will be the best for you.
Any additional comments?
I wish I had started this course when I first left school. Music was the obvious choice at the time, but I wanted to do something different. On the other hand, I did gain a lot of life experiences that have helped me starting something new.
