How you can stay safe

Be prepared

Walking on campus

  • Make sure you use well-lit pathways at night
  • Look around you - if things don't look right, go back inside the building and call the police or security
  • Walk confidently at a steady pace

If you have a car

  • If possible, park your car close to your building in a well-lit, busy area
  • Don't leave valuable items in your car
  • Lock all your car doors and windows when you leave your car
  • Consider installing security technology in your car
  • Before you return to your car, check the surrounding area
  • If you notice any strangers hanging around the car park, call security or the police
  • Carry your keys in your hand so you can get into your car quickly

Working after hours or at night

  • If possible, try to avoid working at night
  • Keep the doors locked, even while you are in the building
  • Make sure there is someone else in the building that you know (staff, students, or building attendant)
  • Walk with a friend to the car park or public transport terminal
  • If you are alone, ask a security guard to escort you to the car park or public transport terminal
  • If you are taking public transport, make sure you know your timetable to avoid waiting alone
