Indigenous Non-Award Pathway

Indigenous students who apply through VTAC for entry into Monash University courses but just miss out, may apply to undertake the Indigenous Non-Award Pathway (INAP) scheme for Australian Indigenous students. INAP is also the pathway for Indigenous people who want to undertake a university course but have been away from education for some time.

What is a Non-Award Unit?

Non-Award Units are single units. You are not enrolled in a degree course but you are undertaking two single undergraduate units. On successful completion these units will be counted towards your Bachelor Degree.

What is the Indigenous Non-Award Pathway all about?

  1. Students undertake two non-award units of study over one or two semesters.

    * The University has two semesters consisting of 13 weeks each, with the academic year beginning in the first week of March and ending in the last week of October. The mid year break is for 5 weeks beginning in June and ending in July.
  2. Students undertaking this program are exempt from course fees (approximately $1200) which are paid by the University. These first two units do not incur a HECS debt and are credited to your undergraduate degree.
  3. Students undertaking this program are required to undertake 2 hours private tutorial assistance per subject per week till they complete the two units. The cost of this tutoring is funded through the Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS).
  4. Students are academically supported by CAIS and their progress is monitored by CAIS while they undertake the two units.
  5. Students who successfully pass the two units are then enrolled into an undergraduate Bachelor Degree at Monash University.

You can apply if you:

  • are of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, and
  • have writing skills comparable to a Year 12 pass or TAFE equivalent, and
  • can demonstrate a strong commitment to tertiary study, and
  • have applied through VTAC to undertake a degree course at Monash University and either have just missed out on a place or think that you will miss out on an offer of a place
  • or

  • are mature age and interested in pursuing further study.
