Highlight: Australian students in Malaysia
A record number of students have this week begun their studies at Monash University 's prestigious Malaysian campus. More than 900 Monash University students began their university life by attending orientation sessions at the campus in Sunway and participating in a host of games and events.
This year's first semester intake also features 55 students who have travelled from the University's Australian and South African campuses and are studying one or two semesters in Malaysia as part of a generous student mobility campaign.
The package, which was open to Australian and South African citizens and permanent residents, included free airfare and accommodation, in addition to the Monash Study Abroad grant given out as part of a student mobility program, which encourages students to study up to two six-month semesters at another Monash campus as part of their course.
Pro Vice-Chancellor and President ( Malaysia ) Professor Robin Pollard said it was important to encourage students to gain an international education at Monash University .
"There are high expectations in Malaysia that Monash can make the international university vision a reality through bi-directional student mobility," Professor Pollard said.
"Until now, very few students from Australia have spent time on exchange in Malaysia . We are helping to reverse that trend, in support of Malaysian national objectives and to broaden the experiences of all Monash students."
The package is offered as part of the Monash Passport to enhance students' learning experience by providing them with a host of opportunities to broaden their horizons, expand their education and life experiences, and contribute to society through social activities or research.
Monash University Student Association (MUSA) President Mr Yeong Yung Lin said Orientation events would be held throughout the week to help introduce new students to the Sunway campus.
"We also hope to provide them with opportunities to make new friends and sign up for activities organised by the various clubs and societies on campus," he said.
Key orientation weeks events include a sporting event called the MOlympics later this week, which will provide students with the opportunity to participate in various games on campus and a workshop for international students.
A Cultural Awareness Workshop for international students, organised by the Monash University International Student Service, will provide international students with information on Malaysia and its culture.
