Credit arrangements

Students who successfully complete this pair of units and are subsequently successful in gaining a place in one of the following Monash University degree programs will receive the following credit transfer:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Arts (Communication)
  • Bachelor of Communication
  • Bachelor of Arts (Journalism)

A first-year sequence in communications, which allows students to proceed to second-year studies in communications or writing.

Other degrees

Other degrees of the university (such as the Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Commerce) which allow credit transfer for communications will offer similar credit transfer.

COM1010 Media Studies

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to describe and analyse the production, distribution and reception as well as the formal properties of media texts. The unit focuses on 'mass media' as a set of relationships between owners, producers, texts and audiences.

Course materials introduce these relationships in connection with studies of power and influence, focusing on particular dimensions of difference and inequality in social life. Areas of study include news production, media ownership and diversity, textual analysis, film and sport.

Assessment

  • Two essays (3000 words total): 60%
  • Participation in an online discussion group: 10%
  • Examination (2 hours): 30%

COM1020 Introduction to Communication Studies

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of communication technologies, with reference to arguments about audiences, effects and technology. Areas of study include telephony, television and screen, radio, print and digital communication technology, with a particular focus on aspects of historical development and contemporary technological convergence. Subject readings and assessment exercises expect students to discuss these matters in relation to frameworks for making sense of social, cultural and political contexts of modern life.

  • Examination (2 hours): 30%
