These studies are provided by academic units within Monash University's Faculty of Arts.

General summary

Attendance at weekly classes is compulsory.

 

Term one commences in early February and finishes in late May. Term two commences in mid June and finishes in early October so as not to interfere with VCE examinations.

Background of students

Preparatory study: Japanese – second language. This subject is not available to native or near-native speakers of Japanese, Please note, this will include some students who qualify for Japanese as a second language units in VCE. All students will undertake placement testing, and those who already have competence above the level of these units will be excluded. Students with advanced competence in the language may be eligible for the Enhancement unit 'Japanese for Background Speakers.'

  • Completion of units 3 and 4 in Year 11 (recommended)
  • OR
  • Concurrent enrolment in units 3 and 4 in Year 12 (this option is only suitable for students with strong language competency)

All applicants will be individually assessed to ensure they are appropriately placed in this course.

Class requirements

Classes run for about three hours per week (normally on Tuesday from 4.30 to 7.30 pm).

Credit arrangements

Students who successfully complete JPL1050 and JPL1060 and subsequently gain a place in a Monash University degree that allows a Japanese sequence will have the following options:

  • Option 1: Receiving credit
    Students may elect to receive credit for their successful completion of Japanese 5 and Japanese 6 and then enrol in Japanese 7 and 8 as second-year units, followed by Japanese 9 and 10 as third-year units.
  • Option 2: No credit but advanced placement
    Students who wish to maximise the amount of Japanese they can take in their degree may use their Enhancement units as a prerequisite to allow them to enrol in Japanese Japanese 7 and 8 at first year level, followed by Japanese 9 and 10 in their second year, and Japanese 11 and 12 in their third year.

JPL1050 Japanese 5

This is the first part of an intermediate sequence which covers both spoken language and contemporary written language. Language acquisition through active interaction in and out of the classroom is encouraged.

JPL1060 Japanese 6

This is the second part of an intermediate sequence which covers both spoken language and contemporary written language. Students will improve their reading, writing and oral skills through studying issues in Japanese society and culture.

Assessment

  • Written tests: 40%
  • Aural/oral tests: 20%
  • Quizzes and assignments: 40%
