Career opportunities

As an architectural designer you could provide leadership in the design and construction of the built environment, collaborating with architects, engineers, builders and other design professionals.

You will not be eligible for architecture registration, but you will be a qualified engineer. Many Australian architectural designers work for practices both here and overseas. Many Australian firms regularly undertake international projects too.

You could work in either an architectural or engineering office working on:

  • design of structures, buildings and bridges
  • urban or commercial developments
  • green or sustainable development projects
  • planning projects
  • renovation of existing projects to provide more sustainable energy efficient solutions
  • project or construction management.

Why study Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Architectural Design?

The building industry needs engineering professionals with strong architectural knowledge.

Architectural designers take building to a whole new level, combining a thorough understanding of how buildings function with creative approaches to building.

Architectural design and engineering is an exploration of solutions to a wide variety of engineering and social problems, like looking at sustainable ways to build or renovating existing structures to work more efficiently.

Architectural designers work closely with architects to develop solutions to clients' projects that integrate form and appearance with practical functionality.

You will graduate ready to solve a range of architectural, engineering and social problems through creative thinking and advanced building and design skills, making you attractive to architectural and engineering firms in Australia and overseas.

Engineering is a hands-on discipline where learning goes beyond the classroom so it is important that you choose a university with the very best facilities to support your learning. Monash University hosts unique, world-class engineering facilities including:

The Monash Engineering Research and Industry Training (MERIT) program prepares you for life beyond your undergraduate degree. Twelve weeks of vacation employment is undertaken during the program allowing you to get experience in securing employment, a taste for working in industry and a head start on your career.

Enrolment obligation

Major study areas

Civil engineering and architectural design.

The architectural design component enables students to express their building design in an innovative way whereas the civil engineering component enables students to understand the load path and design safety issues associated with the architectural design. The course meets the needs of the building industry which requires engineering professionals with strong architectural knowledge.
