After you register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), you will be eligible to teach in Victorian primary schools and in secondary schools in years 7 to 10. You will also be qualified to teach students with special and diverse needs.
Graduating from this program qualifies you to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), the statutory authority that regulates and promotes the teaching profession in Victoria. Like other professions that involve positions of trust and responsibility, teachers must be registered to practise their profession. The VIT registers teachers working in Victorian government, Catholic and independent schools.
If you want to teach interstate or overseas, you should check the registration requirements with local authorities.
Teachers with the confidence and ability to educate children from the age of five through to their mid-teens are a huge asset to the profession. This degree will prepare you to do that and give you the skills for one of education's most rewarding roles - teaching children with diverse and special needs.
You will benefit from learning alongside our experienced primary, secondary and special and inclusive-education academics, and leading researchers.
Our program covers all aspects of the curriculum from prep through to year 10. You will develop your understanding of child and adolescent development, classroom practice, curriculum, assessment and evaluation and professional ethics. You will undertake a major sequence in education and in curriculum studies.
You will gain skills in learning and educational policy and practice, child and adolescent development, multiculturalism and diversity in education, global and sustainability education, and applied learning. Major curriculum subjects include English, mathematics, science, the arts, history, physical education and health, Indigenous studies and social education.
Your special education discipline sequence will give you highly sought-after knowledge. You will gain an understanding of inclusive and special education, effective instruction in special education, behaviour disorders and positive behaviour support.
You will also gain valuable practical experience by completing a minimum of 80 days of satisfactory professional placements throughout the course. These placements connect the theoretical components of your studies with the practical aspects of teaching. And if you want the chance to teach overseas, consider an international professional placement - an amazing opportunity to gain first-hand teaching experience in such locations as the Cook Islands and South Africa.
