Candidates for the PhD in Journalism develop advanced scholarly and professional research and publication skills, with particular reference to the relationship between the two modes in the service of enhancing public knowledge and understanding of contemporary social issues. Candidates are required to submit a major piece of original journalistic research in a non-fiction genre together with a critical exegesis. The research will produce new knowledge and/or use existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings.

Admission to the PhD (Journalism) will require one of the following qualifications in journalism or a related discipline as well as substantial documented professional experience in the field:
All applicants must submit evidence of practical work in the field in a portfolio which will include the following:
1. A research proposal of 2-3 pages addressing the following headings -
i. Research question
ii. Background to the research
iii. Aims of the research
iv. Methodologies of the research
v. Examples of comparative practice as research and associated literature
vi. Proposed structure of the practice/creative based project
2. A covering letter explaining the candidate's interest in the degree and a CV outlining the candidate's professional interests, previous research and publications, if any.
Applications for external candidature will only be approved in those exceptional circumstances with the applicant is able to demonstrate the professional experience and ability necessary for higher degree research by off-campus mode.
