Performance is a particular area of research strength for Monash Arts. In theatre, our researchers have a specialist focus on indigenous cultural performances, from Indigenous Australian and Maori performing arts, to India and Japan.
So, if performance research with a strong theory-practice nexus interests you, join us and enrol in our Master of Arts (Theatre Performance) by research degree.
In this course you will develop and present a live performance in a public venue and submit an accompanying critical commentary of your work. The performance can be in one of a number of fields including directing, theatre making, dramatic writing or theatre design.
While undertaking your research, you will be supervised by an academic whose research expertise aligns with yours. For example, if the philosophy of performance piques your interest, you may find yourself working with Peter Snow, who has worked as a director, writer, theatre-maker and performer, and has helped to create over 60 professional productions in Europe, Asia and Australia.
See our research supervisors and their areas of expertise to find a suitable supervisor for your interests.
When completed, your research should make a significant contribution to the current body of knowledge on your chosen topic.
You may also choose to continue on to a PhD in Theatre Performance to further expand your expertise in performance-based research.
