The postgraduate program in Journalism at Monash is for people who want to enter a career in journalism, and for working journalists who want to extend their skills to new areas and explore the intellectual basis of their practice. It emphasises high level skills in research and reporting for all media - print, online, radio and video - combined with critical analysis of the role of the media in contemporary society. It is an articulated program comprising the Graduate Certificate (one semester full-time), Graduate Diploma (two semesters full-time) and Master of Journalism (three semesters full-time). Monash Journalism has strong links with industry and with leading universities in journalism education nationally and internationally.
Graduates of the program can expect: to have strongly developed skills in research and reporting at the level required for entry to a professional career, and/or to have extended existing skills in new directions; to have worked in collaboration with fellow students at the local, national and international levels; to have built a portfolio of published work in their chosen media as a basis for seeking employment; to have a critical understanding of the role and power of the media, and the ethical accountabilities that entails.
