As a social worker, you could be involved in chronic and critical-care situations in the government and non-government sectors. You may find work with community groups, government departments and hospitals and contribute to the planning, administration and management of social and welfare services, or directly provide them to people in need.
You could also work in private practice as a management or organisational consultant, family therapist, counsellor or psychotherapist.
With the addition of your health sciences degree, you will have particularly strong claims to opportunities in planning and organising health services and education and policy in clinics hospitals, community organisations, local government, public-health departments and managed care and related institutions.
This course has been accredited by the Australian Association of Social Workers.
This double degree will give you essential skills to understand the social context in which medicine and health care are practised nationally and internationally, and the power to advocate and work for change.
As a social worker, you'll engage directly with people whose health needs are often under threat or being ignored.
As an allied health practitioner, you will learn to identify, investigate, analyse and evaluate health issues and programs through your knowledge of physiology, epidemiology, healthcare systems, health promotion, policy analysis and health sociology.
As a combined health and social worker, you will be in a powerful position to address inequality and injustice and improve the quality of life for individuals, groups and whole communities.
You will learn from award-winning experts on real-world social problems and health problems, such as child abuse, problem gambling, and inequitable access to care. You will benefit from our links to Monash teaching hospitals, health and welfare providers across Victoria and researchers around the world.
Offered over four years at our Caulfield campus, the course includes fieldwork placements with social welfare providers and opportunities to study at our South Africa campus.
Our graduates include recent migrants and refugees who are making a huge difference to the welfare of their immediate communities and Australian society.
With skills in social welfare and health promotion, communications, policy administration and community health, you will graduate ready to take a leadership role in local and global health and welfare issues.
