As an occupational therapist, you will help people of all ages overcome physical, mental and/or social challenges to participate in everyday activities.
You could work individually or as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team in a hospital, rehabilitation centre, supported-employment service, psychiatric clinic and on specialised programs for children, the elderly or people with developmental disabilities.
This degree is accredited by OT Australia and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, meaning you could find work just about anywhere.
Helping people overcome obstacles to participate in life makes occupational therapy one of the most rewarding careers you could choose. With this internationally recognised degree, you could get your rewards anywhere in Australia or overseas.
Occupational therapists give life back to people of all ages, who often struggle to perform simple daily tasks as a result of injury, illness, disability and developmental or behavioural issues.
You will learn to help people maintain independence, care for themselves, and re-engage in work and leisure activities. You will become sensitive to people's unique needs and the wider context in which they function. You will learn to work in teams with other health professionals, helping individuals, small groups and whole organisations and communities.
Our four-year course, delivered at our Peninsula campus, is influenced by our presence in major hospitals and extensive research activities at the Monash Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health and the Epworth Monash Rehabilitation Medicine Unit.
You'll learn from experts who've helped children gain the use of their hands and overcome behavioural and developmental issues. They have helped concussed footballers return to the field, injured workers in a range of occupations get back on their feet and, through advocacy, young people with disabilities move from aged-care facilities into their own special accommodation.
You'll get the chance to apply your evidence-based skills in the first year of the course and much more intensively in the final years.
If, during your first and second years, you achieve a distinction average (75 per cent or above), and rank among your peers in the top 10 per cent, you may be eligible for entry into the honours stream and be able to work on a supervised research project. If successful, you will graduate with an honours degree without an additional study period.
