Bachelor of Physiotherapy for 2009

Course overview

A degree in physiotherapy prepares you for a range of career opportunities in metropolitan, rural and remote settings. Physiotherapists may work independently or as part of a team of health care professionals. They provide care for people in public and private hospitals, health centres, sports medicine clinics, maternity hospitals, rehabilitation centres, aged-care facilities and in private practices, and also work in health promotion, education, management and research.

The curriculum is structured around conditions for which people typically seek physiotherapy. These provide the context for integrating learning about biomedical sciences and physiotherapy skills. In the last two years of the course, students also learn in a clinical environment under the supervision of expert clinicians.

Career outlook

Physiotherapists contribute to health primarily through treatment of disorders that benefit from physical intervention strategies. They work in a variety of settings such as in hospitals, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation centres, community health centres, sports medicine clinics and sports institutes, maternity clinics, educational and research institutions, and private practice. Physiotherapists may work individually or as part of a multidisciplinary health care team.
