Why study Master of Arts (Creative Writing)?

Indulge your passion for creative writing by enrolling in our Master of Arts (Creative Writing) by research degree.

In this course you will develop a component of creative writing which can be in the form of a novel or novella, a group of short stories, a play or group of plays, a sequence of poems, or a portfolio of works of various genres, along with an exegesis of your work.

While undertaking your research, you will be supervised by an academic whose research expertise aligns with yours. For example, you may find yourself working with Dr Ali Alizadeh, a writer of fiction, poetry, non-fiction and criticism, whose collection of poetry, Ashes in the Air, was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Literary Award for Poetry in 2012.

We have a number of academics who are active researchers in different areas of creative writing and literary studies. See our research supervisors and their areas of expertise.

When completed, your research should make a significant contribution to the current body of knowledge on your chosen topic.

You may also choose to continue on to a PhD in Creative Writing to further explore the writing process and your genre(s) of interest.

Minimum entrance requirements

The minimum qualifications for admission to 100% research master's candidature are:

  • a four year Australian or New Zealand bachelor's degree with an overall result of a minimum upper H2B (mark of 65 or above) in an honours year (normally with a research component in the fourth year); or
  • an Australian or New Zealand master's preliminary qualification with a significant research component and with an overall result of a minimum upper H2B (mark of 65 or above); or
  • an Australian or New Zealand coursework master's degree with a significant research component graded at a minimum upper H2B (mark of 65 or above), and an overall result of upper H2B or above; or
  • an Australian or New Zealand research master's degree with an overall result of a minimum upper H2B (mark of 65 or above); or
  • qualifications or experience that the Graduate Research Committee considers to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above.

English requirements for international students

IELTS overall test score of 7.0, with a minimum score of 7.0 for the writing module, and at least 6.0 for other individual bands (academic module), or TOEFL minimum test score of 600, with a TWE 5.0 (paper-based score), or TOEFL minimum test score of 250, with an ER 5.0 (computer-based score).

Enrolment obligation

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than 25% of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students cannot enrol exclusively in distance and/or online learning study in any compulsory study period. See standard 9.4 of The National Code 2007.
