Why study Master in School Leadership?

Monash has the research and teaching expertise to inspire the educational leaders of tomorrow who will enhance the learning opportunities of all of Australia's children. Students can choose a program of study from three available options to suit their professional needs and requirements and career aspirations. Students seeking a qualification in "School Leadership" can choose the Master in School Leadership. Students seeking specialist curriculum leadership qualifications in Literacy or Numeracy can choose the Master in School Leadership specialising in Literacy or the Master in School Leadership specialising in Numeracy. These programs have been designed as a pathway to high performing principalship and/or curriculum leadership in literacy and numeracy.

Students will complete four prescribed units in one of the three options available; School Leadership, Literacy Leadership or Numeracy Leadership. While undertaking this course, students will expand their world view through organisational and environmental perspectives and contextually focused projects as they develop their leadership skills and ability to influence at the school and system levels.

Students can enroll direct through the Faculty of Education as full fee paying students or through the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) cohort program. Students who meet the entry requirements for the DEECD cohort program will receive a subsidised place. The DEECD cohort is managed through the Victorian government's education initiative, the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership. For more information regarding DEECD funded places in this professional learning program, please visit the Bastow website www.bastow.vic.edu.au/leadership-courses/leadership-programs/Pages/master-school-leadership.aspx

Throughout the Master in School Leadership students will extend and complement their personal and professional growth; strengthen their scholarship; develop relationships with other leading practitioners and form communities of practice; learn management skills through application of theory into practice, establish an ethic of leadership that is grounded in respect, care and professional support for self and others; and develop alliances within school, local, regional and professional communities.

Career opportunities

The Master in School Leadership is designed to meet the needs of teachers from all sectors who aspire to curriculum leadership and principalship roles in schools. It is an excellent choice for educators who are interested in learning about and developing their capacity for leadership.

Facilitating a higher level approach to key issues within the profession, this program is ideally suited to those seeking curriculum leadership roles in literacy or numeracy and/or principalship in school settings. The program will enhance professional development and inspire individuals to take the next step in their career.
