Professional recognitions

Australian

Graduating from this program qualifies you to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) - the statutory authority that regulates and promotes the teaching profession in Victoria. Like other professions that involve positions of trust and responsibility, teachers must be registered to practise their profession. The VIT registers teachers working in Victorian government, Catholic and independent schools.

International

If you want to teach interstate or overseas, you should check the registration requirements with local authorities.

Why study Bachelor of Visual Arts and Bachelor of Education (Secondary)?

If you want to gain the knowledge and skills for a career in creative and visual arts, or visual arts education, this is the ideal course for you. This program will develop your artistic skills in one or more visual media, while also giving you the chance to share your passion and artistic creativity with secondary school students.

Our visual arts program requires you to complete a major and minor sequence from a range of choices, including painting, sculpture, printmedia, photomedia, theory of art and design, and visual arts studio. You will develop your skills and creativity as you progress through the program, learning from active visual-art practitioners.

The education component of our program will give you a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical foundations of education and classroom teaching and practice in schools. You will also learn about the relationship between education and society. Secondary education studies include adolescent learning, curriculum and assessment, professional engagement and researching educational practices.

You will gain valuable classroom experience by completing a minimum of 80 days of satisfactory professional placements throughout the course. These placements connect the theoretical components of your studies with the practical aspects of teaching. If you want the chance to teach overseas, you have the option of doing an international professional placement. This is an amazing opportunity to get first-hand teaching experience in locations such as the Cook Islands or South Africa.

This course consists of core secondary education units, and a major and minor visual arts sequence.

All visual arts units are undertaken at our Caulfield campus and all education units are undertaken at our Clayton campus.
