Why study Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation and Bachelor of Education?

The Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation and Bachelor of Education (Secondary) double degree allows students to combine a passion for sport and outdoor recreation with the rewards of a career as an educator. Students undertake studies in sport and outdoor recreation simultaneously with studies covering the theory and practice of teaching.

Graduates will be confident and competent educators who are able to specialise their teaching career in physical education and outdoor education. In addition, you will also be qualified to work in a range of positions in the sport and outdoor recreation industries.

The sport and outdoor recreation program is designed to give you a deep understanding of the relationships between movement, recreation, health and wellbeing, physical education, leadership and the environment through a combination of class-work and practical components.

The education degree provides you with comprehensive knowledge of education theory and practice combined with practical teaching experience to ensure you graduate as a confident and competent educator.

Secondary education studies include adolescent learning, curriculum development, assessment, language and literacy, and you will qualify for two teaching specialisms. Studies in secondary education are offered in two distinct study streams. The physical education and outdoor education stream qualifies you to teach physical education and outdoor education at all levels of secondary schooling. Within the multidisciplinary stream your specialisms will be either physical education or outdoor education, combined with one other discipline such as ccounting, health, IT/computing, mathematics, psychology or science. The faculty's website has further information on which specialisms are currently available and details of the required prerequisites, visit www.education.monash.edu/units/secondary-specialisms.html.

The double degree Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) requires the successful completion of units totalling 204 credit points. The study equivalent to achieve 204 credit points would normally be 4.25 years of full time study, however this course has been structured to allow completion in just 4 years full-time or 8 years part-time. This is made possible by the incorporation of a 12 credit point study overload in the final year of the course.

Career opportunities

Following registration with the VIT, graduates will be qualified to teach in Victorian secondary schools and related teaching services. Graduates will be specifically qualified as physical education and outdoor education teachers (dependent on the stream studied). Graduates of the secondary education degree may also choose to qualify for an alternative secondary teaching method. Graduates wishing to teach interstate or overseas are advised to check registration requirements with local authorities. For further information visit www.vit.vic.edu.au.

Graduates may also pursue careers in sports and outdoor education related fields including sports management, outdoor recreation, sports training and development, recreation and leisure, commercial recreation or tourism.
