Why study Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation and Bachelor of Education (Secondary)?

This double degree allows you to combine your passion for sport and outdoor recreation with a career in secondary school teaching. The course prepares you to be a confident secondary teacher with specialist skills in physical education, outdoor education and/or another specialist teaching area such as business, history or biology. In addition, you will also acquire skills and knowledge in sport and outdoor recreation.

Our sport and outdoor recreation program provides you with a deep understanding of the relationships between movement, recreation, health and wellbeing, physical education, leadership and the environment. You will study sport and outdoor recreation theory and undertake exciting professional placements in coaching and instruction, leadership and programming, and sport education. Our practical fieldwork program covers a range of settings, focusing on the employment and training needs of sport and outdoor recreation industry staff. Throughout your degree, you can take advantage of the fantastic sport and recreation facilities available at our Monash Peninsula Activity and Recreation Centre.

The education component of our program will give you a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical foundations of education and classroom teaching and practice in schools. You will also learn about the relationship between education and society. Secondary education studies include adolescent learning, curriculum and assessment, professional engagement and researching educational practices.

Studies in secondary education are offered in two distinct specialist teaching areas. The physical education and outdoor education specialist teaching areas qualify you to teach physical education and outdoor education. Within the multidisciplinary stream, your specialist teaching areas will be either physical education or outdoor education combined

with another specialist teaching area, such as accounting, health, information and communication technology, mathematics, psychology or science.

For information on which specialisms are currently available, as well as prerequisites, please visit the specialist areas and prerequisites page of the Faculty of Education website.

You will also gain valuable classroom experience by completing a minimum of 80 days of satisfactory professional placements throughout the course. If you want the chance to teach overseas, you have the option of doing an international professional placement. This is an amazing opportunity to get first-hand teaching experience in locations such as the Cook Islands and South Africa.

This course consists of core and elective units in education and sport and recreation, and professional and fieldwork placements for each. You will complete the outdoor experience and physical activity requirements of each sport and outdoor recreation unit, totaling 40 to 60 days.
