Students combine studies of music with the theory and practice of teaching and graduates qualify as music professionals and primary teachers. This course is designed to fully prepare students for careers as teachers in primary schools, and includes a minimum of 80 days of professional placements within schools throughout the course.
The education studies provide an in-depth knowledge of the theoretical foundations of education, curriculum studies and teaching practice, covering all key learning areas. Students gain an understanding of the nature of education, classroom teaching and practice in schools, and the relationship between education and society. The studies in music introduce students to the fundamentals of music within a practical, theoretical, critical, historical and contextual framework. Students develop skills in musical performance and musicology, and complete two major study sequences in music - one of performance, and one of musicology, composition or ethnomusicology. The course is undertaken between the Peninsula (primary education units) and Clayton (music units) campuses.
The Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education (Primary) requires the study equivalent of 4.25 years of full time study, however it has been structured to allow completion in just 4 years full-time or 8 years part-time.
By combining studies of music with the theory and practice of teaching, graduates qualify as music professionals and teachers, and following registration with VIT are eligible for employment in Victoria as primary school teachers or in a range of performing arts based careers including music educator, musician, and performing artist. Graduates wishing to teach interstate or overseas are advised to check registration requirements with local authorities.
