After you register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), you will be eligible to teach in Victorian primary schools and related teaching services.

You can also pursue a career in a music or performing arts role, including music educator, musician and performing artist.

Graduating from this program qualifies you to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) - the statutory authority that regulates and promotes the teaching profession in Victoria. Like other professions that involve positions of trust and responsibility, teachers must be registered to practise their profession. The VIT registers teachers working in Victorian government, Catholic and independent schools.

Why study Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education (Primary)?

If you have a passion for music that you want to share with primary school students, this double degree is the ideal course for you. By combining music studies with the theory and practice of teaching, you will qualify as both a music professional and primary school teacher.

Your music studies will cover the practical, theoretical, critical, historical and contextual aspects of music. You will develop your skills in music performance and musicology, and music interpretation for performance and conducting. You will also learn to think independently about the issues surrounding music performance and promotion in the community. You will complete two major sequences in music; one in performance and one chosen from composition, musicology or ethnomusicology.

Core education studies focus on teaching and children's learning in a social setting. You will complete units in learning areas, including English, the arts, mathematics, health and physical education, science, the humanities, and information and communication technologies. You will study teaching and learning theories for primary school children and curriculum development and implementation. When you graduate, you will be equipped to teach children to develop their creative, physical, intellectual and social abilities, as well as their literacy and numeracy skills.

You will also gain valuable classroom experience by completing a minimum of 80 days of satisfactory professional placements throughout the course. These placements connect the theoretical components of your studies with the practical aspects of teaching. If you want the chance to teach overseas, you have the option of doing an international professional placement. This is an amazing opportunity to get first-hand teaching experience in locations such as the Cook Islands and South Africa.

This course consists of core primary education units and two music major sequences.

Units 1 and 2-two units (any) study combination of general mathematics or mathematical methods (CAS) or Units 3 and 4-mathematics (any). Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. Note: a minimum ATAR of 70.00 is required for admission to this course.

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

  • A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and
  • Successful completion of any mathematics subject.

Enrolment obligation

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than 25% of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students cannot enrol exclusively in distance and/or online learning study in any compulsory study period. See standard 9.4 of The National Code 2007.

Become the complete 21st century musician by surrounding yourself with some of the finest professionals in their fields at one of the best music schools in Australia - the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. Students receive one-on-one teaching to develop their solo and ensemble performance skills, and also explore composition, musicology (the academic study of music), and ethnomusicology (the study of music of different cultures).
