After you register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT), you will be eligible to teach in Victorian primary schools and related teaching services.
You may also pursue a career in a creative arts, design and visual arts-related field, including painting, sculpture, print media and photo media.
Graduating from this program qualifies you to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) - the statutory authority that regulates and promotes the teaching profession in Victoria. Like other professions that involve positions of trust and responsibility, teachers must be registered to practise their profession. The VIT registers teachers working in Victorian government, Catholic and independent schools.
If you want to teach interstate or overseas, you should check the registration requirements with local authorities.
If you want to gain the knowledge and skills for a career in creative and visual arts, or visual arts education, this is the ideal course for you. This program will develop your artistic skills in one or more visual media, while also giving you the chance to share your passion and artistic creativity with primary school students.
Our visual arts program requires you to complete a major and minor sequence from a range of choices, including painting, sculpture, printmedia, photomedia, theory of art and design, and visual arts studio. You will develop your skills and creativity as you progress through the program, learning from active visual art practitioners.
Core education studies focus on teaching and children's learning in a social setting. You will complete units in learning areas, including English, the arts, mathematics, health and physical education, science, the humanities, and information and communication technologies. You will study teaching and learning theories for primary school children and curriculum development and implementation. When you graduate, you will be equipped to teach children to develop their creative, physical, intellectual and social abilities, as well as their literacy and numeracy skills.
You will gain valuable classroom experience by completing a minimum of 80 days of satisfactory professional placements throughout the course. These placements connect the theoretical components of your studies with the practical aspects of teaching. If you want the chance to teach overseas, you have the option of doing an international professional placement. This is an amazing opportunity to get first-hand teaching experience in locations such as the Cook Islands and South Africa.
This course consists of core primary education units, and a major and minor visual arts sequence.
All visual arts units are undertaken at our Caulfield campus. Education units are delivered at our Clayton campus in first year and at our Peninsula campus in the second, third and fourth years.
