Bachelor of Visual Arts / Bachelor of Education for 2010

Course overview

Teaching is a recognised and well-regarded career path for visual arts graduates. This double degree allows students to build a strong foundation in both education and the arts, and is perfect for people who want to develop their artistic talents towards exhibiting and selling works, or sharing their passion and creativity with children in the classroom.

Visual arts studies can be taken in painting, sculpture, print media, photo media, tapestry, ceramics, glass, metals and jewellery. Students must successfully complete a major (three years) and minor (two years) sequence in visual arts.

Education studies provide a comprehensive knowledge of the theoretical foundations of education, curriculum studies and teaching practice. Core primary studies cover key learning areas of arts, English, mathematics, health and physical education, science, studies of society and environment (SOSE), and technology, and include practical experiences in primary schools, and other appropriate settings. Students gain valuable classroom experience by completing a minimum of 80 days of professional placement, with some placement being undertaken in each year of the course. Students can undertake the course at either the Gippsland campus or between the Peninsula (primary education units) and Caulfield (visual arts units) campuses.
