Why study Honours degree of Bachelor of Midwifery?

This degree gives students a recognised pathway to a higher degree by research. It is designed to enhance students' ability to promote professional midwifery and to lead and achieve in their chosen field. Midwifery in contemporary health care requires professionals who are highly trained, technically competent and capable of identifying problems, and applying research methods in a practice environment.

Minimum entrance requirements

To be eligible for entry to the Honours Degree of the Bachelor of Midwifery students are required to have:

  • completed course 3562 Bachelor of Midwifery or 3953 Bachelor of Nursing Practice and Bachelor of Midwifery at Monash University, or a comparable graduate qualification in midwifery from another approved tertiary institution
  • a combined average of 70 per cent or higher for semesters three, four, five and six of the Bachelor of Midwifery, or equivalent performance in the final two years of a midwifery degree from another tertiary institution.

The Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery may make a case for a student who has demonstrated research potential but does not have a grade average that meets the requirements above.

Entry requirements

English requirements for international students

Satisfactory completion of a sufficient period of study, at a sufficiently advanced level, in an English-medium institution, or substantial English-medium school or department within a larger institution. The applicant must have completed satisfactorily the equivalent of 48 Monash University credit points (a standard full-time year) either

  • of study in a university undergraduate award program or
  • study in a TAFE or VET diploma program, or
  • study in a program that has been assessed as being taught at an equivalent in level to Monash University undergraduate study.

Gaining the required result in one of the following tests of English language:

  • a minimum overall IELTS test score of at least 7.0 with individual band scores required at 6.5 for Reading, 6.5 for Listening, 6.0 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking.
  • a TOEFL minimum test score of either:
  • in the written TOEFL, 580 with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5
  • in the internet-based TOEFL, an overall score of at least 90 with at least 22 in the written section, and no less than 20 in any section
