Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience) for 2013

At a glance

Career opportunities

You'll find opportunities in animal management and welfare within government and private enterprises, in both regional or metropolitan industries and settings. Employment opportunities in animal health and nutrition are increasing in Australian agricultural industries, as well as in the animal biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, especially within the biotechnology precinct in Melbourne. You may find work in research institutes, research centres and diagnostic laboratories, which are working hard to develop new technologies to support animal quarantine facilities and disease prevention. Or you may choose wild animal research and management.

This degree also provides an ideal preparation for further studies and entry into veterinary medicine, but does not qualify you to practice veterinary science.

Why study Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience)?

This is the degree for you if you're passionate about animal science. You'll study a wide range of topics including anatomy, biochemistry, animal health, animal diversity, immunology, microbiology, physiology, animal ecology and animal biotechnology. And the course is structured to make sure you have a strong grasp of core sciences (like chemistry, cell biology and statistics) together with a focus on animal health and ecology.

This degree is offered at our Gippsland campus, so you benefit from studying animal health in a regional location and context. Your laboratory work is supported by fieldwork and case studies at nearby sites such as farming and breeding enterprises, animal health practices, and natural habitats with wildlife populations.

To complement your core studies, and to give yourself a further competitive edge you can select elective units from complementary areas like environmental science, or communications - allowing you to tailor your study to meet your interests and career or research goals. The choice of an applied research project or an industry based placement in your final year will develop your technical expertise, help you build industry specific contacts, and the hands-on skills required for jumping straight into employment or further research.
