You'll receive specialist training for a career in the healthcare industry, biomedical research and gain an ideal background to progress to postgraduate studies in science or medicine. You'll develop quantitative and qualitative research skills and an understanding of the need for scientific research and development to have an ethical base, particularly in the context of bioengineering and human health.
Career opportunities exist in health promotion, government departments, health management, research, education and specialised laboratory work in clinical, diagnostic, pharmaceutical and forensic laboratories.
You'll will graduate well prepared for the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT) and for a range of further study options, including in medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, occupational health and nutrition and dietetics.
The highly technical field of medical bioscience is all about the human body, health care and disease. But you won't be peering through microscopes all the time. Fieldwork with a laboratory or community health organisation and professional training are also built into your course.
You'll study a wide range of topics, including anatomy, biochemistry, cellular metabolism, immunology, medical microbiology, human physiology, pharmacology and pathology. Every subject is tailored to meet the specific demands of our region, and we make sure you leave with a sound understanding of ethics.
We offer this course both at our Gippsland campus in Australia and Sunway campus in Malaysia. You can read more about the Bachelor of Science (Medical Bioscience) at Sunway.
The course commences with a foundation year, covering biology, biotechnology, chemistry and statistical reasoning and analysis. You also study a wide range of topics specific to medical bioscience and undertake a professional attachment to a clinical or medical laboratory.
Khatijah Khalilur Rahman says the course is "mentally stimulating and challenging, enabling me to grow as a student, but still allowing me enough free time to engage in social and extracurricular aspects of my life."
Khatijah took a holistic approach to her education and chose elective units from other faculties. Like her, you might find that the degree provides a neat pathway to studying a MBBS (Graduate Medicine Program).
