Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Computer Science for 2010

Course overview

The double degree combines the best of both worlds. It offers graduates the strong communication skills, critical analysis and problem-solving ability of a science degree, plus numeracy and complex skills of an information technology degree. For the science component, students complete two science core units, a minor or major sequence in mathematics, and a major or minor sequence in another science area of study. The computer science component provides students with an in-depth study of computing with an emphasis on the software, hardware and theory of computation to solve a range of commercial, scientific and technical problems. It also explores software design and programming, computer hardware, the theoretical foundations of computing and its present and potential applications. High achieving students may apply to participate in the Industry Based Learning (IBL) stream of the Bachelor of Computer Sciences.

Career outlook

The course gives graduates an edge in a wide range of employment opportunities related to both science and computer science. Please refer to the career information for these degrees.

TAFE

Diploma graduates

To be considered, applicants who have completed VCE or its equivalent and who are applying with:

a science-based diploma will require average results of at least 60% (70% to be considered for BA/BSc and BSc/BCompSc, and 80% to be considered for BScAdv(Hons))

a non-science-based diploma will require average results of at least 70% (80% to be considered for BA/BSc and BSc/BCompSc).

Applicants who have not completed VCE but have completed:

a science-based diploma will require average results of at least 70% (80% to be considered for BA/BSc and BSc/BCompSc)

a non-science-based diploma will require average results of at least 80%.

TAFE Certificate graduates

Science-based certificate-level studies will be considered where the applicant has average results of 80% or above. For applicants who have also completed VCE, both qualifications will be considered. No credit is granted for these studies.

University

Two single units satisfy minimum entry requirements, but more units may be useful for selection, especially in science areas. Applicants for the single degree programs, except BScAdv(Hons), should have at least a 60% average in their studies. Applicants for science double degree programs should have at least a 70% average in their studies.

Those without Year 12 prerequisites for particular courses need to complete units that correspond to these prerequisites (eg Mathematics Methods for Science/Computer Science).

These studies need to have been completed no more than five years prior to admission.

VCE prerequisites

Units 3 and 4 a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English, and a study score of at least 20 in mathematical methods (either) or specialist mathematics.
