Ambulance paramedics are in demand from government and private ambulance service providers in Australia. You will also find work opportunities in industrial and community emergency-health settings here and overseas.

Monash is the only Victorian university to provide postgraduate training for the elite Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance paramedics (MICA).

The course is recognised by Paramedics Australasia and the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals NSW.

Entry requirements

Minimum entrance requirements

Equivalent Australian year 12 or relevant post secondary education.

Applicants must pass a police check prior to undertaking clinical placements. Successful completion of medical and fitness assessments are a prerequisite for clinical placements with metropolitan Ambulance Service and Rural Ambulance Victoria. Infectious diseases and vaccination policies apply.

VCE prerequisites

Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English and a study score of at least 25 in mathematics (any).

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

  • A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and
  • A score of at least 4 in mathematics SL or 4 in further mathematics SL or 4 in mathematical studies SL or 3 in mathematics HL or 3 in maths case HL.

Special application requirements

SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS; Police check: Students must complete a National Police Records Check before undertaking clinical placements. Working With Children Check: Students must hold a Working With Children Check before undertaking clinical placements. Failure to hold satisfactory checks may result in students being unable to complete this course. Health check: Students must comply with the Monash University Department of Community Emergency Health and Paramedic Practice (CEHAPP) Health Requirements Policy before undertaking clinical placements.
