Course overview
This degree provides the practical skills and knowledge required of an ambulance paramedic at a beginning practitioner level. First-year studies introduce students to the biomedical, social sciences, human development and biological concepts that underpin clinical paramedic practice. In second year, students undertake the first component of the two-year professional phase. They study concepts of professionalism and the core clinical skills, including clinical problem-solving and decision-making. They begin to explore common emergency medical conditions, including trauma. Third-year studies cover the paramedic management of patients with various mental and physical conditions. Students explore leadership and clinical mentoring, research and evaluation, and the broader scope of emergency preparedness and multi-casualty situations. Studies are supported by supervised clinical placements in hospitals, other health service agencies and ambulance service providers.
