Course overview

The increasing influence of globalisation has created strong demand for language skills among students who aspire to work in business, education, media and politics.

This course seeks to further understanding of applied linguistics for secondary and tertiary language teachers, especially as it relates to second and foreign language acquisition and language teaching. It is especially designed for graduates of universities in Japan, China, Indonesia and Korea who wish to teach their language to foreign students in an Asian country. It may also be of interest to teachers of English as a second language. The program can be completed by six coursework units; or a combination of five coursework units and a professional project; or four coursework units plus a 16,000-word thesis. Students undertake core units in second language acquisition and applied linguistics research methodology and then choose either stream A electives (teaching Asian languages) or stream B electives (teaching English as a second language). Note that this course does not qualify graduates to teach in Australian schools.

Exit points: Students may exit the program after successful completion of four units with a Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics for Language Teachers.

Career outlook
