Career opportunities

The dynamic nature of communication design means that you have an exciting array of career options open to you upon graduation. You can pursue opportunities in design studios, advertising, media companies, gaming, film and television, publishing and corporate communications.

Depending on the brief, communication designers work on projects that can include corporate identity, branding, typography, illustration and image making, interactive media, interaction design, web and app design, animation, motion graphics, information design, print and digital publishing, environmental graphics, packaging design or post-production.

Why study Bachelor of Communication Design?

Communication design is a rapidly evolving profession. As print, screen and interactive media converge and new technologies emerge, designers must be competent visual communicators who can work across a multitude of platforms, designing content for the medium that best meet their clients' needs.

From traditional print to digital media and motion graphics, communication designers work with colour, language, space, sound and spatial forums.

New in 2013, this comprehensive degree combines studies in visual communication, multimedia and motion graphics to ensure you graduate with an industry-relevant and recognised qualification.

By developing your own unique strengths and passions, you'll build an impressive folio of professional-standard work, showcasing your complex skills and conceptual maturity across a variety of media and communication platforms.

Creative studio practice is a core component of the degree. You'll spend over half of your time in the studio, developing and polishing your practical and conceptual skills. Almost a quarter of your studies are electives, so you can pick units that inspire you - whether that means developing your strengths in traditional print or digital media, or gaining skills in branding and identity design, 2D and 3D design, motion graphics, audio-video or illustration.

You'll also find studies in design theory and criticism help you create ideas and concepts to support your studio work.

You'll develop the confidence to adapt as our world changes around us, learning from international design stars, such as Professor John Warwicker (from 'Tomato'), innovative cross-disciplinary practitioners, including Trinh Vu, and local design movers and shakers, such as Warren Taylor ('The Narrows').

We often bring in guests from the design world to ensure you're always up-to-date with industry trends. In 2011, Danish designer Karel Martens undertook a residency with us and ran a range of student workshops.

Our graduates are helping shape the future of design nationally and internationally. Regular winners of the 'AGIdeas' New Star awards, they're also running their own studios in Melbourne and designing for major galleries and studios in New York, London and Hong Kong.

Their designs, typefaces, animations and illustrations appear everywhere from ARIA-award-winning album artwork to iconic brands like Aesop and Hilton Hotels.
