At a glance

Career opportunities

If you want to practice professionally as an architect, the Bachelor of Architectural Design is the first of the two degrees you will need. Once you successfully complete it, you're guaranteed entry into our two-year Master of Architecture.

With the Master of Architecture, you will be ready to practise. Our constantly changing built environment means a continual demand for architects exists in Australia and internationally.

The Monash architecture program is fully accredited. When you graduate from the five-year, Bachelor of Architectural Design and Master of Architecture program, you will meet the academic requirements for registration as an architect in Australia.

To register as an architect in Australia, you must also complete an additional two years of professional practice experience and pass the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia Architectural Practice Examination. For more details visit the Architecture Registration Board of Victoria.

As an architecture graduate, you will have to grapple with problems not yet imagined. Not simply a technician in the world of today, you will be a participant in shaping the world of tomorrow.

Why study Bachelor of Architectural Design?

Architects shape the environment that we live in. They can revitalise our cities, help us live more sustainably and create rich environments for us to live and work in. If this fits your passion, this degree is your first step in a two-degree program toward becoming an architect.

Be immersed in architecture from day one. With an emphasis on making, you will work across multiple media and scales, from drawing to digital fabrication to models and full-scale building. Through design media, you will learn to critically observe and test your ideas. You will also examine design and its relationship with urban networks, while developing an understanding of techniques and technologies.

Spend over half your degree in the architectural design studio. Explore areas such as housing, digital practices and sustainable urban design, and undertake studies that let you interact with communities and work on projects that benefit others - in 2012, our students created interactive kids' play spaces for 'ArtPlay' in Birrarung Marr.

You will be consistently presenting and discussing your projects, so you will develop specialist communication skills to engage clients and collaborate with other built-environment professionals.

Explore architecture in-depth through discipline-specific electives or choose interdisciplinary units that allow you to work on creative projects with your art and design peers. If you choose electives from other art and design areas, for example, interior architecture, communication design and fine arts, you can work with a range of techniques and materials, such as glass and metals. You can even brush up on your Italian, or pick up some marketing skills by taking interesting electives from another faculty.

Explore global issues and discover how to apply your knowledge to create local solutions. Our internationally diverse team of academics and visiting-architects program mean architects from around the world are in your studio, giving you the benefit of their global experiences. For example, in 2011, architecture students collaborated with Norwegian-based Rintala Eggertsson Architects to design and build the 'Sea Light Pavilion' at Docklands.

If that's not enough, you can study part of your degree at the Monash Centre in Prato, Italy, or pick from one of our travelling studios, taking you interstate or overseas to work on site specific projects.
