Course overview
This four-unit course explores many of the theoretical and practical issues involved in reading and writing biographies and life stories. It covers practical issues such as accessing resources and ways to design and utilise interviews, as well as the ethical, moral and legal questions involved. The course also provides an understanding of how psychoanalysis, feminist theory and postcolonial studies have influenced biography and life writing. Students explore the history of biography and autobiography and the some of the ways in which biographies have been constructed. The use of life stories in history and sociology will also be discussed.
