Bachelor of Software Engineering for 2013

At a glance

Career opportunities

We designed this degree in response to industry demand for graduate software engineers who can work on large-scale software systems projects.

You'll gain the skills needed to work for government organisations and corporations who undertake major software development.

These skills are equally important to small operators and large enterprises that provide software engineering and integration services to governments and businesses.

You'll be qualified to work in a range of roles around the world, including as an applications developer, internet developer, programming specialist, systems programmer, software designer, engineer, architect, consultant or developer.

Professional recognitions

Australian

This program is accredited for the purpose of admission to Engineers Australia at the level of professional engineer. You are also eligible for professional-level membership of the Australian Computer Society.

Why study Bachelor of Software Engineering?

Want to work in what US-based employment website CareerCast described as 2012's number one job? Want to work for major companies, governments and other organisations, who depend on properly designed and implemented software?

This four-year degree, designed in response to industry demand, will develop your ability to solve problems and develop, analyse and improve software.

You'll be able to work in a range of contexts - including development, programming and testing - to ensure that software runs effectively, safely and securely.

You could become a forensic and fraud consultant for global audit company PwC, like graduate Bevan Forbes, who says he loves seeing the impact his work has on the world. He first worked for PwC under our Industry-Based Learning (IBL) program, which offers high achievers a 22-week industry placement in third year and a scholarship of up to $19,000.

Another graduate, Fraser Perkins says the IBL program gave him an edge over the competition. He was placed with major software developer Readify, who allowed him to use advanced technology to develop and maintain new systems for a range of clients.

The course highlight for honours student Jonathan Mullins was making an Android application for the ANZ bank, which overlayed ATM and branch information onto Google Maps as part of the compulsory fourth-year project to build software for a real client. In his spare time, Jonathan also set up the mykileaks.org website to help users of Melbourne's troubled public-transport ticketing system analyse their statements, which were wrong in about a third of cases, according to his site.

If you need more incentive, why not aim for our fourth-year honours stream to qualify for our Monash Undergraduate Research Projects Abroad program? You could study over the summer semester at such pioneering institutions as the University of California in San Diego, the University of Illinois' National Center for Supercomputing Applications or the Technion at the Israel Institute of Technology.
