Why study Bachelor of Technology (Infrastructure - Design, Construction and Management)?

NOTE: This course is now in teach-out mode. There will be no intake into the course except those who are already in the agreed pathway as described below.

Infrastructure technologists build, manage and design the detailed facilities that serve society and business, such as bridges, schools, airports, railways, freeways, dams, housing developments and manufacturing plants. This course offers a flexible path to university study. Entry is via completion of the first 18 months of the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) at the Holmesglen Institute of TAFE or equivalent, and is subject to academic performance and quotas. Upon successful completion of the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) with an overall final average of 70% or higher, applicants apply to the second year of the Bachelor of Technology (Infrastructure - Design, Construction and Management) degree at Monash. The final two years of the degree program is taught at the Clayton campus. Second and third year studies at university include structural analysis and design, construction methodology, waste disposal, building materials, design methods, public health, geotechnical engineering and system management, computer software and communication skills. After completing the Bachelor of Technology (Infrastructure - Design, Construction and Management) degree, and subject to academic performance, students may apply to transfer to the final year of the Bachelor of Engineering in the field of civil engineering.

Career opportunities

Graduates work in construction, site layout, equipment selection, staff organisation, materials management, preparing tenders, environment controls, asset management, quantity surveying, energy audits, structural-building design, sustainable development impact studies, risk assessment and consulting.

Minimum entrance requirements

NOTE: This course is now in teach-out mode. There will be no intake into the course except those who are already in the agreed pathway as described below.

Equivalent Australian Year 12.

Minimum entrance requirements for non-school-leavers

TAFE

Pathways exist between the Diploma of Technology (Computing) at Holmesglen or Chisholm TAFE and Monash's Bachelor of Technology (Computer Studies) and also between the Diploma of Built Environment at Holmesglen and Monash's Bachelor of Technology (Infrastructure - Design, Construction and Management). Students who complete one year of either of these TAFE courses or equivalent can apply to enter the second year of the relevant three-year technology degree.

University

Monash offers three single units in the areas of mathematics, chemistry and physics that provide a suitable preparation for engineering courses:

ENG1070 Foundation Chemistry

ENG1080 Foundation Physics

ENG1090 Foundation Mathematics

(this unit assumes knowledge equivalent to VCE Mathematical Methods).

These units are similar in content to the VCE units of Chemistry, Physics and Specialist Mathematics or their equivalents. Students undertaking similar units through other institutions should ensure their studies also satisfy the course prerequisites.

Background studies

Because of its specific prerequisite requirements in the areas of English, mathematics and at least one of chemistry or physics, the faculty believes that VCE provides the most suitable preparation for all applicants. However, it recognises the other pathways outlined here.

VCE prerequisites

Units 1 and 2 - General Mathematics or equivalent, and the successful completion of an Australian Year 12.

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

English and mathematics (any) at a minimum of grade four at standard level.

University entrance requirements

Minimum entrance requirements for admission to Monash University Australia.

Applications

Semester one (March)

Applications for this course are made directly to the Faculty. Contact information can be found by visiting the Monash faculties website
