Bioethics is a particular area of research strength for Monash Arts. Research into bioethics illuminates the fundamental questions of human existence and behaviour, including ethical issues regarding the relation between minds and bodies. Particular areas of research strength include ethical issues in patient care, the ethics of clinical trials, medical end-of-life decisions, new reproductive technologies, nursing ethics, surrogacy, disability and discrimination, and moral psychology and development.
Our Centre for Human Bioethics, established in 1980 as Australia's first research centre devoted to bioethics, has developed into one of the world's leading Centres of its kind. The Centre has become known for its practical and non-sectarian approach to ethical issues, and has produced ground-breaking work in a number of different areas including reproductive ethics, end-of-life decision making, and the development of utilitarian and virtue-based approaches to ethics.
As such, this course is typically of particular interest to health care professionals, teachers in the health care field, and those with a general interest in the area.
While undertaking your research, you will be supervised by an academic whose research expertise aligns with yours. For example, if medical conflicts of interest appeals to you, you may find yourself working with Associate Professor Justin Oakley, the Deputy Director of our Centre for Human Bioethics.
See our research supervisors and their areas of expertise to find a suitable supervisor.
When completed, your research should make a significant contribution to the current body of knowledge on your chosen topic.
