Why study Bachelor of Visual Arts?

This is a multidisciplinary professional course for students wishing to work in the broader arts industry or arts education. The course enables students to appraise a variety of contemporary media in order to develop a theoretical and interdisciplinary understanding of art practice.

The course provides pathways to professional training and development in the broader filed of visual arts, including visual art education, arts business, curatorial practice and art theory. It allows students to study a combination of units that best suit their individual and professional aims.

Career opportunities

A degree in the visual arts is intended to equip graduates for a career in the arts industry as a curator, arts writer, art educator or artist, or to work in museums, galleries, community arts programs, art and design consultancies or conservation organisations.

Entry requirements

Minimum entrance requirements

Students must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 program or equivalent. Australian Year 12 applicants are not required to submit a folio.

VCE prerequisites

Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English and a study score of at least 30 in art or studio arts.

International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites

  • A score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and
  • A score of at least 5 in visual arts SL or 4 in visual arts HL.

Non School Leavers Only

Application Kit: Applicants must download a kit online by 30 September. Applicants can access the kit at Open Day. Telephone requests will not be accepted. Applicants must complete and submit the kit by 7 October.

Interview and folio presentation: Details will be sent to applicants by 7 November. Applicants must attend in November. Advisory letters will be sent to applicants by 12 December.

This course is currently not available to international students.

Enrolment obligation

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than 25% of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students cannot enrol exclusively in distance and/or online learning study in any compulsory study period. See standard 9.4 of The National Code 2007.

Major study areas

In first year students are exposed to a range of visual art studios and theoretical frameworks. In second and third year, students develop projects that reflect the interdisciplinary focus of the course. Students choose a major studio from painting, printmedia, photomedia, sculpture or theory of art and design.
