Computer science is the study of the theoretical foundations of computation leading to the systematic design of computer software and hardware. It is not restricted to current technologies. Instead it emphasises fundamental principles, enabling graduates to understand, anticipate, and shape future developments. Computer scientists drive cutting edge developments in bioinformatics, intelligent systems, networking, scientific computing, and many other areas where challenging information processing problems must be solved. They help to make the web manageable with powerful search engines, to make entertainment more exciting with ever improving animation and gaming technologies, to break new scientific ground with sophisticated data analysis methods, to advance medical research with new methods for predicting drug function and for interpreting genetic information, and to make digital life safer with new encryption and security systems.
The Bachelor of Computer Science is designed for students who wish to study computing in depth. It focuses on software development, computer architecture, and the underlying theory of computation. These areas are combined with the study of computational approaches in science and engineering and of information processing applications in industry and commerce.
High achieving local students may apply for a place in the Industry-Based Learning (IBL) program in which they complete a 22-week industry placement during the third year of the degree and receive a scholarship of up to $19,000. The placement is part of the curriculum and is formally assessed and credited towards the degree.
Graduates are in demand and may gain employment in a wide variety of roles such as specialist programmer, systems analyst, research scientist, consultant and IT management. Successful graduates often perform research and development in exciting areas such as artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, networking and cryptography, computer games, multimedia, and robotics.
Graduates of the course from Australian campuses are eligible for professional-level membership of the Australian Computer Society.

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than 25% of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students cannot enrol exclusively in distance and/or online learning study in any compulsory study period. See standard 9.4 of The National Code 2007.
Computational science enables the study of vast amounts of data that modern science and engineering must process during computational analysis and visualisation. Computers allow us to perform virtual experiments that are too dangerous, too costly, or plainly impossible to conduct in reality, and using simulation we can even explore hypothetical worlds.
The computational science major complements computer science with foundational studies in another field of science and with specialised topics in scientific computation. It aims to produce graduates that combine a scientific education with computational expertise and are adept in trans-disciplinary work.
Decision support is a vital component of organisations and the environments they operate in. They have become increasingly more complex, and information technology has become an indispensable component of the decision making processes that allow us to deal with this complexities. Decision support systems use innovative IT techniques to model organisations and to reveal the impact of alternative choices on the quality of service and operational costs. Decision support applications include strategic planning, market analysis, resource allocation and scheduling, online adaptation and operational control. The decision support major complements the foundational studies in computer science, with topics on data analysis, decision making, intelligent systems, and decision support systems.
Systems development requires not only a solid grounding in computer science, but also sound knowledge of technological topics, such as computer architecture and networking. The systems development major combines the study of these areas with basic training in software engineering and is aimed at students who want to focus on the engineering aspects of information technology.
