Our program focuses on algorithms, software development and the underlying theory of computation. You'll study computational approaches in science and engineering and information processing applications in industry and commerce.
One of our associate professors, Jon McCormack, uses computer science to create art. His internationally-renowned work has appeared at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne. He has also developed the Nodal app - a completely new way of composing music with a computer.
Our graduates are also running their own businesses. Damian Kovach and Adi Rum, for example, created a search engine that matches people to gyms and fitness centres in their local area.
While still at Monash, James Eunson created a full-scale iPhone app to help other students find Monash buildings, handbook entries, events, shuttle-bus timetables, staff and the latest University news.
If you're a high-achieving local student, you can apply for our Industry-Based Learning (IBL) program, which includes a 22-week industry placement in third year and a scholarship of up to $19,000. Former IBL student Phillip Abramson used the program to help Oxfam Australia improve the functionality and user-friendliness of its intranet.
The course consists of six core information technology units, eight core computer science and mathematics units (including a computer science project), two electives from an approved list of computer science topics and eight open electives.
You can also complete a major or two minor sequences from your electives. If you're selected for the IBL placement program, those units replace your computer science project and two approved computer science elective units.

Computational science enables the study of vast amounts of data that modern science and engineering must process during computational analysis and visualisation. Computers allow us to perform virtual experiments that are too dangerous, too costly, or plainly impossible to conduct in reality, and using simulation we can even explore hypothetical worlds.
The computational science major complements computer science with foundational studies in another field of science and with specialised topics in scientific computation. It aims to produce graduates that combine a scientific education with computational expertise and are adept in trans-disciplinary work.
Decision support is a vital component of organisations and the environments they operate in. They have become increasingly more complex, and information technology has become an indispensable component of the decision making processes that allow us to deal with this complexities. Decision support systems use innovative IT techniques to model organisations and to reveal the impact of alternative choices on the quality of service and operational costs. Decision support applications include strategic planning, market analysis, resource allocation and scheduling, online adaptation and operational control. The decision support major complements the foundational studies in computer science, with topics on data analysis, decision making, intelligent systems, and decision support systems.
Systems development requires not only a solid grounding in computer science, but also sound knowledge of technological topics, such as computer architecture and networking. The systems development major combines the study of these areas with basic training in software engineering and is aimed at students who want to focus on the engineering aspects of information technology.
