Career opportunities

On completion of this course graduates may gain employment as clinical embryologists, or work in laboratories in embryology, health, in vitro fertilisation (IVF), or in related jobs within the reproductive biology field.

Why study Master of Clinical Embryology?

This 12-month, intensive course provides students with the essential postgraduate knowledge and practical skills necessary to contribute competently to human infertility clinical services. Theoretical and practical skills are presented in the broad context of the regulations and the ethical considerations that apply to human IVF, both nationally and internationally, along with the quality control procedures required to ensure maximum success for IVF patients. The guidelines, protocols and regulations that steer and control human infertility services are also presented. In addition to attending lectures and self-directed study, students are required to undertake continual practical skills training and also students will undertake a minor research project. Students will not only be equipped with practical skills required for work in an IVF laboratory but also gain a greater understanding of research applications within the field of reproductive or developmental biology. Research-related tasks contribute to the overall assessment for specific coursework units.

Minimum entrance requirements

On Campus

Applicants must have one of the following:

  • medical degree,
  • veterinary science degree,
  • Science related bachelor's degree (with honours - second class or above), or
  • A Graduate Diploma of Reproductive Science from Monash university with an average of 65% or above
  • A Graduate Diploma at another institution deemed by the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences as equivalent to the Monash University Graduate Diploma of Reproductive Sciences with an average of 65% or above.

All applications are assessed on academic merit and relevant experience. Candidates with a Bachelor degree (without Honours) must have at least one year equivalent professional experience in embryology or reproductive biology.

Special application requirements

Applicants must provide:

  • a Curriculum Vitae (CV). This must include work experience and 2 referees and/or work references, where applicable;
  • a Statement of Purpose. The statement of purpose must outline why they wish to join this course (<200 words).

Applicants wishing to study off campus will be expected to provide evidence of their ability to meet the course practical requirements. It is recommended that they submit an supplementary application form to support their application. They must be a trained, or current trainee embryologist. The form gives details of the student's training/professional experience and allows for the nomination of a mentor to be approved by the EPRD who will be appointed to log the student's practical abilities. Completion of this form , signed by the mentor, does not guarantee being able to undertake this course off campus. The crediting of practical units will need to be assessed.

The Master of Clinical Embryology is a high demand course. There is a quota on the number of successful applicants. Applicants meeting the minimum academic requirements are not guaranteed entry.

English requirements for international students

A minimum overall IELTS test score of at least 6.5 with individual band scores required at 6.0 for Reading, 6.0 for Listening, 6.0 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking;

a TOEFL minimum test score of either: in the written TOEFL, 580 with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5; or in the internet-based TOEFL, an overall score of at least 90 with at least 22 in the written section and no less than 20 in any other section.

Enrolment obligation
