Bachelor of Interior Architecture for 2013

At a glance

Career opportunities

You'll emerge from this degree with a capacity for strong conceptual thought combined with practical skills that are sought after by the architecture and design industry. As an interior architecture graduate you can adapt heritage buildings for new uses, or design unique objects for theatre sets. You might curate a mix of media and technologies to develop exhibitions or create urban experiences to help communities grow.

You may choose to follow a career path in design for the retail and commercial sectors, domestic interiors, furniture, entertainment industries or the general architectural sector. Other options can include festival and exhibition design, lighting, and set design.

Why study Bachelor of Interior Architecture?

Interior architects explore how people engage with the world around them. By combining this knowledge with an understanding of structures and building technology, they create spaces that communicate ideas and shared values and stories.

Monash offers the only Bachelor of Interior Architecture degree in Melbourne, giving you the chance to focus on the built environment inside commercial, cultural and domestic buildings. By learning to balance creative design and construction technology, you'll discover how to generate design concepts, analyse your work and find creative solutions to spatial challenges.

With a strong focus on the studio and design practice, you'll get a foundation in the principles of spatial design while experimenting with your design ideas. You'll advance your studio practice through complementary architectural and construction units, so you can confidently adapt structural features to create complex internal spaces. By exploring the materiality of space, structure, objects and furniture you'll learn how to create spaces that can encourage people to engage and interact or share a common identity.

Many of your studio projects will examine existing spaces, environments and buildings so you'll be developing solutions for existing organisations - from dance studios to shopping centres. And throughout your studies you'll have the chance to take your designs from 2D concept to 3D installation. By working full-scale you see exactly how your choice of materials and construction methods and your attention to detail all shape the outcome - which ultimately helps you advance your design practice.

During the break between third and fourth year, a six-week unpaid work placement in an interior architecture studio or a related practice helps you build industry contacts and confidence before finishing your degree and launching your career. Graduate Jacqui Low found this experience invaluable. She completed her six-week practical placement with international design practice HASSELL, and worked on projects like the award-winning pop-up food truck, Chasing Katsune. Jacqui is now employed at HASSELL as an interior designer.
